RAVEN BY PAULINE CREEDEN - BOOK BLITZ

Released Date: 10/2014

Summary from Goodreads:

This is the complete Steampunk Fantasy novel - all four parts of the serial in one volume!

Human life has value.
The poor living in the gutter is as valuable as the rich living in a manor.
The scoundrel is no less valuable than the saint.
Because of this, every life a reaper takes must be redeemed.

Raven has lived by this first tenet since she was trained by her father to
become a reaper. But since his death, she’s been spending years redeeming the
lives she’s taken. By her count, she’s even and it’s time for that life to end.
If she settles down and becomes a wife, she might just feel human again. But on
the way to the life she thinks she wants, the baron of New Haven asks her to
complete a task which she cannot ignore… Just when Raven decides to give up on
her life as an assassin, she’s pulled right back in.

Gateway Trilogy: BOOK BLITZ!

Gateway (The Gateway
Trilogy #1)

by Christina
Garner

Release Date: 06/2014

Summary from Goodreads:

Ember has always known she doesn’t belong
in this world. But when she tries to correct the mistake, she wakes to find
herself in a mental institution.

She’s soon drawn to Taren, the mysterious boy with hazel eyes. He’s not what he
seems, but what is he?

When chaos erupts, they are forced to flee the institution together, and the
secret that Taren has been keeping brings Ember closer to understanding her
own. And leads her to… the Gateway.

Here's an Excerpt!

“Did she hurt you?" Taren asked. "Your head hit the tile pretty hard.” That explained the spinning, and the pain that was starting to seep through the cracks of my shock.

I reached up to touch the back of my head.

“Ow! Yeah, I guess she got me pretty good. What was that about, anyway? What's her problem with me?”

Before he could answer, one of the nurses approached. “We'll get you checked out now, dear.”

“I was just going to get her some ice,” Taren said, his hand on the small of my back, steering me away from the nurse.

“Don't be silly,” the nurse said. “She could have a concussion. We need to take her to the E.R.”

While she went to confer with an orderly, I stifled a laugh. I had been wanting to get out of there. Maybe if my mother knew I was just as likely to lose my life inside the mental hospital as out, she'd spring me that much sooner.

“Wait.” Taren leaned close, his breath in my ear. My pulse went back to racing. “Do you have any…birthmarks?”

His question was so bizarre that I was heedless of the pain and snapped my head to face him.

“What?”

His eyes were only inches away, boring into mine. He grabbed my wrist and pushed up the sleeve of my hoodie, searching. I tried to pull away, but his grip was too strong.

“Do you?” he asked again, checking the other arm.

“N-no,” I stammered.

Intensity didn't usually unnerve me, but at that moment, his definitely did.

“Taren, enough!” the nurse said, hurrying back to us. “What on earth are you doing?”

She pried his hands from my arm, causing Taren to come back to himself.

“Nothing, sorry.” He dropped his gaze. “Sorry, I hope you feel better.”

He turned abruptly and strode away.

Dead Girl Walking: Excerpt

Dead Girl Walking (Royal Reaper #1)
by Ruth Silver
Release Date: 04/24/14
Patchwork Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Princess Ophelia Dacre sneaks out of the castle to visit her boyfriend in secret. A perfect night cut short when she’s brutally murdered.

Ophelia is given the rare chance to become a grim reaper. She must become Leila Bele, cut ties with her old life, and follow the rules of the reapers. Her greatest adventure begins with death.

Here's An Excerpt!

“Reapers are part of the undead. We’re not like the stories you’ve heard across cultures,” Edon said.

Violetta smiled. “We don’t ride on a chariot transporting souls to the underworld, or wear a black cloak, unless you want to make one.”

“Forget everything you know about grim reapers, Ophelia. Humans have it wrong. It’s easier to believe in angels and demons, than to see what’s right in front of you. Who wants to believe the undead walk among us with beating hearts? It would frighten humans. It would probably send many to their graves faster,” Edon said.

Throne of Glass: Review

Goodreads (description):

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.

Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My Review:

I have to say, this book had a lot of twists and turns that I was NOT expecting. Most of them I can't tell you, because I don't like giving away spoilers.

Anyway, Celaena Sardothien is freaking awesome. She's an assassin yes, but she isn't heartless. She has been through a whole lot of crap and if she hadn't learned how to fight then she would be dead ten times over. Celaena does what she has to do in order to survive.

I also love her wit. She's funny and clever and all around a cool person.

This is really hard to write. Not because it's a bad book, in fact, it's freaking awesome! But it took me forever to finish it because I only have time for like ten minutes in the morning before classes to read. Still, reading this book was a great part of the day. It was adventurous, and filled with intrigue.

I loved Dorian and Chaol. They were strong and determined. I loved their friendship. Dorian is in a hard position, but I am happy that he likes books. I don't know why, but when other people like books talking with them is super easy, because WE CAN TALK ABOUT BOOKS. And I love talking about books, as did he and Celaena. I thought that was fun.

Chaol sort of reminded me of Shang from Mulan at times--mostly when he was being awkward. It cracked me up.

I thought it was great on how it was a bit hard to determine who the bad guy was. I like how we didn't figure it out until later in the book. It was mysterious and creepy!

I apologize... usually I'm better at writing reviews. What I want to say is that this book is totally worth reading! It's amazing and I loved it.

Also, I think you should invest in the prequel books before reading this series. There are references there that aren't mentioned much in this book, but still... THEY ARE GREAT. And it will help you understand Celaena a bit more.

I give it a 5 out of 5!

Dragon Rising GRAND FINALE

A Themed Tour through Prism Book Tours.

We're blitzing the GRAND FINALE for
Dragon Rising by Rachel E. Fisher

Dragon Rising is Asher's story and takes place during the first third of Eden's Root, which is the first book in the Eden's Root Trilogy. If you missed any of the tour, go back and check out the reviews and excerpts!

Kelly P's Blog - Excerpt
There was a creak and Asher straightened, clicking off the keychain, the sickly blue LED glow vanishing. He waited in the darkness, his back pressed to the wall of the supply closet. His free hand tightened around the hilt of his sword.

Since everyone fled fearing nukes, the City was largely abandoned, the towers and subways now skeletons and blood vessels in a dead body, a corpse left to rot in the summer sun. At times he imagined walking out to the center of one of the Avenues and standing there alone, certain that he was the last man on Earth.

The abandoned state of New York City) deepened the ache for his parents. What if he was one of the last men of Earth? Not “were,” not the subjunctive…the subjective. What if he WAS one of the last men on Earth? The thought rattled around his brain like a psychotic marble.

"This is a novella that gives us the backstory of one character and it would be easy to mistake it as a prequel even though it’s labeled as #4; it is not a prequel in the usual sense and should be read after the first three books or, at the least, after Eden’s Root. Then you’ll just be adding to the pleasure you’ve already gotten"

Hope to Read - Excerpt
When I first moved here last fall I never admitted that I was nervous. It’s not like I’d ever really left Chicago. But that first night, when sirens floated up from the streets I slept with a smile on my face. It felt like home.

Now it’s a silent, sticky wasteland.

Fundinmental & sherryfundin - Review
"This is a horror story that has no supernatural monsters, just the humankind.

I am blown away by this series and find it hard to put into words how frightening it is....

Rachel’s writing gave me a first hand experience into what could be our future.

The Eden’s Root Trilogy has stuck with me long after I finished reading."

Colorimetry - Review & Excerpt
"I love this novella. !! It's dark and harsh and gritty... and I felt Asher's hunger and what he was willing to do to find food, making this dystopian reality so real, it hurts."

I’ve decided to stop keeping a body count after today. All 11 additions are from one site, a grocery store on 93rd. Someone trapped the family inside - easy enough with steel plates over the doors.

SBM Book Obsession - Spotlight

"I thought this story was good. I was a little confused since I hadn't read anything else but loved what I read. The story is written well and keeps you intrigued."

Pieces of Whimsy - Excerpt
I’m doing better at getting sleep now, whether that’s from exhaustion or adaptation, I don’t know. Either way, I’ve managed to avoid the gangs so far. I’m alive and that’s all that matters. If I can keep it together…if I can survive this first wave of death, someone will get things back up and running, right? There’ll be radio or an Army convoy, or something. There has to be.

Anyway. I was robbed last night while I slept. I guess I should be grateful that I’m still alive. (And I’m not being tortured. Bonus.) And I’m grateful that they didn’t see my sword and take it.

Brooke Blogs - Excerpt
The wheeze of his breath rang in his ears, but he tilted his head, listening for his followers. Rivulets of rain splattered through the shattered windows, last vestiges of the thunderstorm that had ravaged the City. But nothing else…

Asher awoke to a scream and sat straight up, nearly braining himself on the pipes above. Ducking just in time, he swiveled, seeking the source of the sound.

“No, please! You can have me, just let Cassie go!”

Dragon Rising
