The Alchemyst: A Review

Goodreads (description:

Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on 28 September 1330. Nearly seven hundred years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life. The records show that he died in 1418. But his tomb is empty and Nicholas Flamel lives. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects - the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. And that's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it. Sometimes legends are true. And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

My Review:

This was a fun book filled with adventure. It was a great break from the dark enemy series I've been reading,

Being a huge Harry Potter fan, I once thought (many years ago ...) that JK Rowling invented Nicholas Flamel. Haha, NOPE.

Nicholas Flamel was once a great alchemyst born in 1330. In this book, he still lives today. Sophie and Josh Newman happen to get wrapped up in his world of magic and intrigue. Their lives are forever changed. They now have to run for their lives with Flamel and a fellow warrior nicknamed Scatty protecting them.

As Sophie and Josh run from the dangerious Dr. Dee and the Dark Elders he serves, we discover there is a lot more to Sophie and Josh than we intially see.

They are part of a prophecy written in the Book of Abraham the Mage. So not only are they running because they helped save a portion of the book, but because they have incredible power the Dark Elders want.

I enjoyed seeing the way Scott incorporated his ancient characters into the modern world. It was also cool to see Nicholas Flamel in a new light--to learn more about the myths on him.

This world reminded me a bit of Percy Jackson with all the myths coming together. Instead of Greek Mythology, it is centered around Flamel and his wife. I always love a good myth and this book was a great way to learn more about Flamel through the eyes of the fifteen-year-old twins, Sophie and Josh.

I give this book a 4 out of 5!

  2. I read the first book in this series a couple of years ago and liked it well enough but haven't continued. I think I will do it with my kids when they are older.
