Hollow City: A Review

Goodreads (description):

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children was the surprise best seller of 2011—an unprecedented mix of YA fantasy and vintage photography that enthralled readers and critics alike.

This second novel begins in 1940, immediately after the first book ended. Having escaped Miss Peregrine's island by the skin of their teeth, Jacob and his new friends must journey to London, the peculiar capital of the world. Along the way, they encounter new allies, a menagerie of peculiar animals, and other unexpected surprises.

Complete with dozens of newly discovered (and thoroughly mesmerizing) vintage photographs, this new adventure will delight readers of all ages.

My Review:

I just have to say, that even though this series didn't turn out the way I expected, these books are amazing!

We get to follow peculiar children around the world of the 1940s as they try to save their beloved Headmistress, Miss Peregrine! These kids have incredible talents and they always do their best to fight and to look on the bright side (except Enoch, but he's a category all on his own).

We read this from Jacob's POV and we get to see a lot of growth in him this book. He learns more about himself and about his peculiarity. He comes more to terms with who and what he is and how he must follow in his Grandfather's footsteps. Though he may be scared out of his mind, he never gives up. Jacob fights for what he loves, he fights for the children he has come to feel for as family.

Emma is pretty cool. I like how she doesn't take crap from anyone. I wouldn't mind having her peculiarity. Fire. Fire is awesome. And Emma has the perfect personality to go along with her peculiarity. She is smart, funny, and fiery. She fights fiercely and always tries to find the best solution.

There are several other peculiar children in this book, and I have come to care for all of them. Hugh, Horace, Enoch (though he is really creepy), Bronwyn, Millard, Olive, Claire, and Fiona. They are a handful, but a good handful at that. If I was stuck in the world of peculiars, I would want them along with Emma and Jacob at my side.

I also liked how I got to see them travel through the world of WWII. I shuddered at all of the terrifying things that happened. Could you imagine being in the constantly bombed London in the 1940s? I can't... and yet these kids still survived. Why? Because they are just that awesome.

This really is an incredible serious. If you like X-Men, you'll definitely like this series. Not to mention that there are lots of creepy pictures to add to the creepy factor.

And, just a little funny. After I finished this book I totally dreamt that I had Jacob's peculiarity. The ending was so abrupt and powerful that it penetrated my dreams...

I give this a 4.5 out of 5!

  1. I am so glad that even though both of these weren't what you were expecting that you still really enjoyed them, that doesn't always happen when we are expecting one thing and get another.

  3. I really loved the first one when I read it back in 2011 but this one lacked a bit of something for me. I still liked it but I didn't love it. I was extremely frustrated with the cliffhanger. Still I am planning on reading the next as long as it doesn't take three years to publish it!

  4. I have been debating this series for so long now, so I am glad you have enjoyed them even if they weren't what you were expecting. They do look good but they also seem like really strange reads. I might wait until all the books are published though, I can't handle cliff hangers and then having to wait forever to read the next book.

    1. I definitely recommend them, but if you don't like cliff hangers I would wait... This cliff hanger is probably the most abrupt I've ever read...
