Awakening
by Shannon Duffy
Release Date: 04/07/15

Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

A thrilling, futuristic sci-fi novel set in a unique and thought-provoking world, from author Shannon Duffy.

Desiree Six (because she was born on a Friday) believes in everything the Protectorate stands for. She likes the safety and security of having her entire life planned out—her career, her mate, even the date of her death. She doesn't even think to question when Darien, her childhood friend and neighbor, is convicted of murdering his parents. They had seemed like such a loving family. But if he was convicted, then he must have done it.

Then Darien shows up in her room late one night. He has escaped from the Terrorscape—a nightmare machine used to punish all Noncompliants—and needs Desiree's help. What he tells her rocks her world to its core and makes her doubt everything she's ever been told. With this new information, will Desiree and Darien be able to escape the Protectorate before it's too late?

What inspired you to write Awakening?

Since I have a bad case of insomnia—well more of a falling asleep issue—I tend to think a lot as I’m tossing and turning. Not so great for sleeping, but awesome for plotting and scheming. So, on one of those nights, I started thinking about the idea of a future with dream machines and the idea of the Terrorscape. I like world building and letting my mind go with crazy ideas of what ifs. I also really enjoy reading futuristic type books. In the weeks that followed, I discussed my idea with my family and we all brainstormed. Based on my description of how I envisioned the government, it was actually my son who came up with the idea to call the government The Protectorate. This still makes me smile. And the romance between Desiree and Darian was really important to me. I wanted it to feel authentic and I worked extra hard on that. I hope I achieved that goal.

  1. I love learning where ideas for books come from! I can totally see myself doing this as well. Some of my best thinking (and remembering) is when I should be sleeping. ;)
