I value friendship – most particularly friendships between adult women – as one of the most valuable privileges life has to offer. It’s funny because I don’t have a lot of friendships. I never have had. I was the girl who sat home alone with a Harlequin Romance on Friday nights during high school. I never went to a prom. Never went on one date during high school.
I always thought my aloneness was, well, first, because I loved books better than hanging out with immature guys around. But mostly it was because my best friend lived states away from me. We’d been best friends since she was five and I was six. She was magic, pure and simple. She got me and it always felt like no one else did.
Something I’ve realized, though, is that what she gave me was the deep rooted knowledge that there is this thing called friendship. It exists. And it’s for everyone and anyone open to it. As women that living and breathing entity – friendship – is there to sustain us through all that life throws at us. Our friends are our strength, our cheerleaders, our butt kickers, our believers…our magic. They understand us. And they are souls we can understand.
I had my 70th novel published this summer. And as I took a look back at two decades of work, I noticed something. Though a lot of my books are romances, telling of the great love between men and women, there is a thread of friendship that has always been there. This came through in all fourteen of the Shelter Valley Stories, though I didn’t know it. Or consciously see it there. But this summer my editor and I were talking about the books and there it was. I’d dubbed it the Shelter Valley heroines club in my mind. In the books, it’s a group of women – all of whom have their own books – who are friends and see each other through all of life’s ups and downs. It’s about acceptance. Forgiveness. And about butt kicking, too. The club is open to newcomers. It’s there for you – the reader. There to give you strength, hope, and acceptance as you find bits of yourself in their stories. It’s there for you to share with your friends.
And if you want to be friends…I’ve started a Friendship board on Pinterest. It’s an open board. Anyone can follow to post. The only caveat – it’s only about friendship. No sales. No causes – no matter how worthy. It’s just a feel good place for a friendship fix. We post personal pictures of us with our friends, pictures of celebrity friends, and lots and lots of friendship quotes. Sometimes we post good morning hugs. We’ve got over 1200 pinners – adding an average of 300 a month – and thousands of pins. That’s a lot of friendship.
